Because history is usually written by the victors, non-dominant voices have often been forgotten over time. The NZMS invites proposals on topics that engage broadly with forgotten voices. Potential topics might include:
- Musicians who have dropped out of various canons
- Music worthy of rediscovery
- Lesser-known work by well-known figures
- Musicians who were silenced or oppressed for political or social reasons
- The effects on music of changes in fashion
- The musical costs of social, political, or religious reform
The NZMS also invites contributions on any other aspect of musical research.
Types of presentations:
- Standard conference paper (20 minutes, plus 10 minutes for questions and discussion)
- Lecture recital (30 minutes, plus 10 minutes for questions and discussion)
- Panel session (90 minutes, with three participants)
- Roundtable (90 minutes, with three to seven participants)
Please provide the title and an abstract of up to 250 words in a MS Word document or PDF, with the file name being the title of the paper only (e.g. Title of Submission.docx). In a separate document, include supporting information outlining the full name(s) of contributor(s), contact details and affiliations, plus short biographies of no more than 100 words.
For panel sessions, please provide an over-arching abstract and a separate abstract for each presenter. For roundtables, please provide one over-arching abstract.
